The Role of Hospital Staff

Hospital staff is responsible for providing high quality end of life care for every patient and family.

In addition, there is also a responsibility to collaborate with the OPO to assess donation opportunities for all patients. This includes referring all imminent and actual deaths, participating in huddles with OPO staff, refraining from early extubation and body release, and ensuring that families are approached by OPO staff if and when the time is right to discuss donation. These concepts will be discussed in more detail in the following units.

Everyone who comes into contact with potential donors and their loved ones, including non-clinical staff, is responsible for following correct procedures.
