Instructions for Proper Eye Care

  1. Keep eyelids completely closed.
  2. Instill sterile ophthalmic antibiotic solution or sterile saline or balanced salt solution, two drops per eye.
  3. Apply lubricating ointment to ventilator-maintained donors.
  4. After death, if the donor corneas will most likely be used for transplant surgery, hospital staff will be asked to instill sterile ophthalmic antibiotic solution or sterile saline or balanced salt solution, two drops per eye.
  5. Lightly apply wet ice packs over eyes, securing them gently into place
  6. Elevate the head at the time of death.
